AASHO Test Loop

AASHO (predecessor of AASHTO) set up a series of test loops of pavement just to the west of Ottawa, Illinois in 1956 to test different pavements. These loops were used for load tests (utilizing large trucks) until deterioration, as well as non-destructive weather tests. Many of these loops were either removed or paved over when the I-80 freeway was built, but one loop for non-destructive testing for weather conditions still remains. The loop is fenced off, but you can take a peek at it from the service road.

In the foreground just beyond the gate is the original 1956 pavement for the weather loop. The loop is still doing what it was made for: testing pavement under weather conditions. Only thing is this loop doesn't see maintenance that I-80 does.

More of the old pavement at the west end of the loop.
