CR 516 is an east-west county route through Middlesex and Monmouth Counties.

In Matawan, CR 516 comes to CR 516 Spur*. Why the asterisk? The Matawan segment of CR 516 Spur is recognized by Monmouth County only. NJDOT recognizes this section of CR 516 Spur as CR 516Z, and the Z indicates a directional route. Z / directional routes are technically considered part of the mainline. However, both Main Street (CR 516Z / CR 516 Spur) and Broad Street (CR 516) are two-way. This is very similar to CR 523 in Flemington, but now there are two official routes, and both are fairly well-signed and defined. The reasoning for CR 516Z may be this: It is easier eastbound to continue straight on Broad Street bypass the main area of downtown, and then turn right onto Main Street where Main and Broad Street intersect in the north of Matawan. Likewise, it is easier westbound to continue straight onto Main Street, pass through the main area of downtown and turn right onto New Brunswick Avenue in the south of Matawan. Even more, when coming from NJ 79, it is easier to follow Main Street / CR 516Z to CR 516 EB (no turns), but you can also turn right onto Broad Street (2 right turns). I guess NJDOT wants to limit the number of turns on a mainline? Probably. Anyways, this diagram explains CR 516 in Matawan:
CR 516 is in blue, and CR 516Z is in red. Notice how only one right turn is needed to follow the mainlines colored on this map.
