Formerly known as Northwestern Avenue, Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. Street linked Indiana Avenue to 38th Street, where the road continued northwest as Michigan Road. This street carried US 36 and US 421 through Indianapolis. This is together with IN 37 (the entirety of West Street) and IN 67 (north of Kentucky Avenue).
At 38th Street, US 36, IN 37, and IN 67 depart from US 421.
