Former 500-series County Routes

This page is devoted to tracking the former 500-series county routes in New Jersey, whether major former alignments or former auxiliary routes. Minor realignments do not count.

Check out Historical Maps of New Jersey from the Rutgers University Department of Geography.

In my custom Google My Maps for this and unless otherwise indicated, former mainlines are in blue and former auxiliary routes are in red.

501

505

Bergen County:

Per a 1955 USGS map, a portion of CR 505 would have been located further west, using Pascack Road, Grand Avenue, and Spring Valley Road. How this would have connected to present-day CR 505 is unknown. And this maybe could have been a realignment for the road had NJ 303 been built or designated along present-day CR 505 from Teaneck to NY 303.

506

Essex / Hudson County:

CR 506 used to extend east along NJ 7 into Hudson County to either the junction with CR 508 or to US 1-9 Truck.

508

Hudson County:

Before the modernization of NJ 7, CR 508 continued along the Newark Turnpike which is now a driveway.

509

Middlesex / Union County:

CR 509 used to extend from CR 531 in South Plainfield to NJ 28 in Westfield via Raritan Road, Martine Avenue, and Broad Street.

Former Auxiliary Routes:

CR 509 Spur used the southernmost section of present-day CR 577 from CR 509 to NJ 124/NJ 82.

510

Essex County:

CR 510 extended east along Market Street and Raymond Boulevard to a junction with US 1-9 and US 1-9 Truck.

514

Union County:

CR 514 extended further into Elizabeth. The road used a one-way pair of Lidgerwood Avenue (WB) and Kenneth Avenue and Edgar Road (EB) before reconvening at Washington Avenue. CR 514 then followed Washington Avenue to Pearl Street and headed west on Pearl to NJ 27. Pearl Street was later converted to a one-way street, thus necessitating the decommissioning of CR 514 in downtown Elizabeth.

Former CR 514 EB (green), WB (purple) and the mainline (blue).

521

Sussex County:

CR 521 was formerly routed along CR 560 and the northernmost segment of Old Mine Road between the Dingman's Ferry Bridge and the Milford-Montague Toll Bridge. The route was placed on an even longer concurrency with US 206 to simplify and straighten the alignment.

522

Middlesex County:

CR 522 was formerly routed along Heathcote Road and Ridge Road from NJ 27 to US 130. When multilane Promenade Boulevard was built, CR 522 was moved onto that road. Promenade Boulevard will eventually extend to I-95 and take CR 522 with it.

Former CR 522 in blue, with another possible old alignment of an old alignment in green.

526

Mercer County:

CR 526 used to extend along CR 571 (and NJ 64) from West Windsor to Princeton. The route does not do this anymore de jure, although the concurrency still exists de facto thanks to signage along that portion of CR 571.

527

Former Auxiliary Routes:

528

Former Auxiliary Routes:

CR 528 Spur was routed along Burlington CR 670 and Burlington CR 616, connecting US 130 in Burlington to CR 528 in New Egypt.

530

Burlington County:

CR 530 extended further west along NJ 38 and the westernmost segment of CR 612 to end at CR 537.

In Pemberton, CR 530 used CR 616 and CR 687 before the Pemberton Bypass was built. CR 530 possibly used CR 630 (North Pemberton Road) instead of its current alignment on South Pemberton Road to CR 537 according to a 1955 map.

The former western extension of CR 530 is in blue. The former route of CR 530 through Pemberton is in green. The possible alignment of CR 530 on North Pemberton Road is in purple.

532

Ocean County:

CR 532 used to use the entirety of CR 554 (Bay Avenue) from NJ 72 in Cedar Bridge to US 9 in Barnegat.

534

Gloucester County:

CR 534 used to extend to NJ 44 by using Delaware Street and Cooper Street to the current western terminus of CR 544 at the Woodbury-Deptford border.

Burlington County:

CR 534 was routed along Atsion Road and CR 648 to connect to US 206.

Burlington/Ocean County:

CR 534 was planned to extend through the Pine Barrens and into Ocean County. I do not know which alignment CR 534 was proposed to take between US 206 and NJ 72.

In orange is a potential corridor of where CR 534 could have been built.

Ocean County:

After CR 532 was moved onto its current alignment, CR 534 was designated along the former CR 532 on Bay Avenue from NJ 72 in Cedar Bridge to US 9 in Barnegat in anticipation of a connection between Bay Avenue and the current segment of CR 534. When this connection would never be built, CR 534 in Ocean County became CR 554.

537

Monmouth County:

CR 537 used to extend into Long Branch before the Avenue of Memories was opened through Fort Monmouth in 2017. CR 537 followed NJ 35, NJ 71, Eatontown Boulevard, and Broadway to the end of CR 537 at Myrtle Avenue in Long Branch. East of Wyckoff Road (CR 547), the former routing of CR 537 (NJ 71, Eatontown Boulevard, Broadway) became part of an extended CR 547.

538

Gloucester County:

CR 538 extended further west along CR 551 and CR 653 to have a second junction with US 322.

539

Mercer County:

CR 539 had a different northern terminus. The road used what is now the westernmost/northernmost segment of CR 571 from Hightstown to Princeton.

Former Auxiliary Routes:

The first iteration of CR 539 Alternate used the westernmost section of CR 526 from Allentown to West Windsor, ending at present-day CR 571.

CR 539 Spur used Ocean CR 610 and CR 532 to connect CR 539 to US 9 in Waretown.

541

Burlington County:

CR 541 formerly used Burlington CR 691 through downtown Mount Holly.

CR 541 formerly used Burlington CR 632 through Burlington.

Former Auxiliary Routes:

CR 541 Alternate was the designation of the Mount Holly Bypass until CR 541 was placed on the bypass.

548

Cumberland County:

CR 548 extended along NJ 47, CR 670, and CR 649 to CR 553.

563

Former Auxiliary Routes:

CR 563 Spur used the entirety of Burlington CR 679 from US 9 in New Gretna to CR 563 in Washington Township.

565

Former Auxiliary Routes:

CR 565 Spur used present-day Sussex CR 628 between CR 529 and CR 565.

575

Atlantic County:

CR 575 used to use English Creek Avenue (present-day CR 603, 604, and 605) before the construction of the Atlantic City Expressway and the establishment of Atlantic City International Airport at its current site.

After the airport was expanded and before the Atlantic City Expressway was extended, CR 575 was routed along CR 563 between CR 604 and Wrangleboro Road (present-day CR 575).

577

Former Auxiliary Routes:

CR 577 Spur (still signed as such) connected the eastern terminus of NJ 10 to CR 577 in West Orange.

583

Mercer County:

CR 583 extended along CR 653 / Calhoun Street in Trenton to either NJ 29 or the Pennsylvania state line.

585

Cape May County:

CR 585 extended much further south. The route extended along NJ 52, CR 656, CR 623, US 9, CR 631, CR 610, NJ 47, CR 657, US 9, NJ 147, and CR 621 before ending at NJ 109. I guess having too many turns and overlaps resulted in the removal of the southern extension of CR 585, especially because the routing was all over the place.

**my words only: If CR 585 was instead routed along Ocean Drive, I think it would have survived in Cape May County to this day.**

Former Auxiliary Routes:

CR 585 Spur followed Cape May CR 618.
