High Line

The High Line is an elevated linear park / rail trail built on a former New York Central Railroad spur that ran through Chelsea. The railroad fell into disuse and faced demolition, however, a community organization known as Friends of the High Line fought to preserve the historic rail line and reuse it as a community asset once more. This created the High Line we see and enjoy today.

Mainline:

The southern terminus of the High Line is an elevated stub at Gansevoort Street. A stairwell and elevators connect the elevated park to street level.

The southernmost portion of the elevated High Line. While the trail ends here, this stub over Gansevoort Street is in place for trees to grow.

The evolution of the High Line.

The High Line passes under Chelsea Market.

The High Line passing over Tenth Avenue. In the distance, Lady Liberty can be seen.

Modern architecture and greenery along the High Line.

I don't know how much of the track is original or reconstruction, but I do know the rails are a part of High Line heritage.

At Hudson Yards, the mainline of the High Line joins the High Line Spur.

The Interim Walkway of the High Line. Part of it is undeveloped and grassed over, and the actual path is bonded gravel. This portion is unlit at night, so it closes earlier at sunset. And despite the name, the Interim Walkway is rather permanent to reflect what the High Line looked like when it was decaying, yet will be maintained so the High Line can be used as a public park.

The Interim Walkway passes over and arcs around the West Side Yards.

The northern end of the High Line at 34th Street. The park ends at grade/street level.

Tenth Avenue Spur:

The Tenth Avenue Spur is a reuse of the original spur track to Tenth Avenue.

The Tenth Avenue Spur splits from the High Line mainline at Hudson Yards.

The High Line Plinth directly above Tenth Avenue. This is the official end of the Spur, although the trail continues to Moynihan Hall.

High Line - Moynihan Train Hall Connector

The Moynihan Connector links the High Line (via the Tenth Avenue Spur) to Manhattan West and the Moynihan Train Hall of Penn Station.

Looking eastward at the elevated Moynihan Hall Connector. This was not a part of the historic High Line, but it is an integral piece to the park. This section of walkway over 30th Street is known as the Woodland Bridge.

The Timber Bridge serves as the mainline of the Moynihan Connector. This links to Manhattan West and ultimately Moynihan Train Hall.

The Woodland Bridge has a stub over Dyer Avenue that serves as an overlook.

Crossing the Timber Bridge.

The Moynihan Connector deposits into Manhattan West.
