I-196 connects the southwesternmost areas of Michigan (and points beyond such as Chicago) to I-96 in Grand Rapids. This was once planned as I-67, however, the route was too short at only 80 miles for a primary designation.
The southern terminus of I-196 at
I-94.
Chicago is a control city for long-distance traffic using I-196.
An old rest area on I-196 SB.
