I-695 in the District of Columbia

I-695 is one of the oldest pieces of the Interstate Highway system. However, it was only signed in 2012 as part of the 11th Street Bridges reconstruction project. This is the Southeast Freeway.

I-695 was intended to be part of a larger network of freeways in Washington, DC that were mostly unbuilt.

I-695 begins at I-395.

Southeast Boulevard is the original alignment of I-695. That segment of the Southeast Freeway connected to stubs for I-295, which were planned as the Barney Circle Freeway.

I-695 crosses the Anacostia River. The bridges were originally part of I-295 but have since reverted to I-695. Why reverted? I-695 was supposed to cross the river while I-295 would have used DC 295 instead of double-crossing the river.

The end of I-695.
