IL 394

IL 394, the Calumet Expressway, is the highest numbered state route in Illinois. The road serves as a southern extension of I-94 on the Bishop Ford Freeway (formerly the Calumet Freeway). The route is interstate-grade from Sauk Village to the I-80/I-94/I-294 interchange, but the route is not signed as I-394. I-394 would have been a reality if another major Chicago airport near Peotone was built, however, Gary/Chicago Airport filled in that role.

IL 394 starts in Goodenow where IL 1 intersects Main Street. IL 394 runs concurrently with IL 1 until IL 1 departs from the expressway. IL 1 used to use IL 394, but IL 1 was placed back on the surface roads.

IL 1 departs from IL 394.

After the intersection with East Sauk Trail in Sauk Village, IL 394 becomes an interstate-grade freeway.

Well... maybe not modern Interstate standards. These deceleration lanes need to be lengthened.

IL 394 ends at the Southland Interchange with I-80, I-94, and I-294. The right-of-way continues north as I-94 westbound, the Bishop Ford Freeway.
