Walnut Street, Bloomington (former IN 37 Business, de facto)

This was former IN 37, as well as former IN 37 Business. Before the construction of the IN 37 western arterial bypass of Bloomington, IN 37 used Walnut Street (and its southbound pair in the one-way pair, College Avenue) through Bloomington. And to leave Bloomington for places further north (such as Martinsville), IN 37 winded through the Cascades and up the hills of Monroe County. Eventually, IN 37 was built into a four-lane arterial between Martinsville and Bloomington, and a newer, straighter alignment was built to directly connect Walnut Street with the IN 37 arterial in the north. The old alignment was preserved.

The western bypass was later constructed and IN 37 was moved there (only to be further truncated when the majority of that bypass eventually became I-69). This resulted in the creation of Old IN 37 as well as IN 37 Business. Business routes in Indiana only have de facto existence and are generally not maintained by INDOT. Most locals consider the southernmost portion of Walnut Street between present IN 37 and Fairfax Road to be IN 37 Business. They also consider the northernmost portion of Walnut Street between the Bloomington Bypass (IN 45 / IN 46) and I-69 to be IN 37 Business (an old alignment of IN 37, sometimes called New Old IN 37), as Old IN 37 (sometimes called Old Old IN 37) takes a different route through Cascades Park. The only question is whether IN 37 Business ever passed through the heart of Bloomington. I assume it would have, especially as Old IN 37.

Looking north on College Avenue, former IN 37 / IN 37 Business SB. College Avenue has basically the same streetscapes as the actual Walnut Street.

Walnut Street at the IN 45 / IN 46 intersection. Just south of here, College Avenue rejoins Walnut Street and (Old) Old IN 37 leaves for Cascade Park. IN 37 Business continues (or resumes) on Walnut Street.
