This is the shortest state highway in Indiana, at just a paltry quarter mile through the Town of Pines. However, this road is an important connector between US 12 and US 20. This lets traffic on US 12 bypass Michigan City and head towards South Bend, or allows US 20 traffic to reach lakefront destinations such as Beverly Shores and the Indiana Dunes National Park. This highway is a case of a 3-digit child route in Indiana, where the parent is US 20. Not all 3-digit state highways in Indiana are child routes of 2-digit routes, but this one is an example of a child route.
IN 520 starts at US 20, its parent route.
