New Jersey Turnpike Eastern Spur (I-95)

After Exit 14, the New Jersey Turnpike splits into two alignments at the Southern Mixing Bowl. These are known as the Eastern Spur and the Western Spur (formally called the Easterly Alignment and Westerly Alignment). The two alignments converge at the Northern Mixing Bowl.

The Eastern Spur is the original roadway and carries the legislated I-95, although the de facto route of I-95 is the Western Spur. This route is preferred for accessing the Lincoln Tunnel and US 46 and is signed for those routes, although VMSs can sign the Eastern Spur as I-95 if the Western Spur is congested (such as at the Meadowlands Sports Complex).

Bonus material: Per a 2023 AASHTO meeting, the Eastern Spur was approved to become I-695, and I-95 is approved to follow the Western Spur. I don't know when, or if, this will ever take effect.
