Newport and Cincinnati Bridge

The Newport and Cincinnati Bridge, also known as the Purple People Bridge, is one of many bridges in Cincinnati across the Ohio River. This bridge was opened in 1872 to carry trains and was later modernized to hold additional loads and a roadway. The roadway connected Saratoga Street in Newport to Butler Street in Cincinnati. In 2001 after extensive urban decay, the roadway was closed. The bridge was later converted to a pedestrian bridge and was repainted purple, hence the name, Purple People Bridge. It's purple and it carries people between the two cities. Not a bridge for purple people, but it sure can handle them.

Starting in Newport.

The former rail deck of the approach.

Entering the truss spans. There is a climb on the western portion of the span that once was operational with proper PPE but was closed since 2007. Especially when there is a better way to cross the river!

View of the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge (I-471).

On the center span of the bridge, the original walkway.

Looking downstream at the Taylor-Southgate Bridge.

Now on the former roadway.
