NJ 124

NJ 124 is the historic alignment for NJ 24 east of Morristown. And yes, NJ 124 is longer than NJ 24. NJ 124 serves as a main street for the multiple towns along its path.

The western end of NJ 124 in downtown Morristown, at US 202 and CR 510.

NJ 124 in downtown Morristown. The road is known as South Street before turning onto Morris Avenue after leaving downtown.

An old crosswalk sign in downtown Morristown. The sign finish has cracked and faded, and there's an old NJDT label on the corner of the sign.

A little further east, in Morris Township.

Low-clearance bridge on the entrance to Madison. Is it any wonder why NJ 24 was built to replace NJ 124 as a through route?

Long-distance destinations indicate the historic role of NJ 124 as a major road (when it was NJ 24). NJ 124 reaches neither Elizabeth nor Newark, but NJ 82 connects NJ 124 to Elizabeth and NJ 124 ends in Irvington, just short of Newark.

I don't know which buildings date back to 1680, but I have a feeling that part of the NJ 124 routing here does date back to then.

Cracked reflective material on this street sign where NJ 124 intersects Morris CR 638.

NJ 124 intersects NJ 24 and Essex CR 649, the JFK Parkway, at a tangled mess known as Exit 7 of NJ 24.

After Exit 7 of NJ 24, NJ 124 becomes the frontage road of NJ 24 and serves as interchange movements from NJ 24 to connecting roads. That sign should have a left arrow for NJ 24 EB, and also reference NJ 124 EB continuing straight.

No. CR 527 Spur does not exist here. That is Essex CR 608. Congratulations on erroneous signage. Check the SLDs again.

NJ 124 passes under the Morristown Line.

That is CR 512 WB, not SB.

NJ 24, NJ 124, CR 527, and CR 512 all have a large, tangled junction. CR 527 SB even overlaps the eastern terminus of CR 512 WB. This used to be simpler before the NJ 24 freeway existed because Broad Street used to be two-way and carry CR 512 to end at NJ 24 (now NJ 124). There was no CR 527 overlap. CR 527, Morris Avenue, also used to be two-way for the entire time and didn't have an overlap with CR 512. But that changed when NJ 24 was built, and we have the huge, tangled mess we see here.

CR 527 shares a brief overlap (longer overlap SB) with NJ 124 before departing for Millburn here. CR 527 enters Essex County here.

NJ 124 at the complex junction with CR 577 and NJ 82. NJ 124 turns to the northeast towards Newark and ends in Irvington. NJ 82 continues the Morris Avenue / Morris Turnpike routing to Elizabeth.

NJ 124 has a partial interchange with I-78.

NJ 124 in Maplewood. The NJ 124 designation ends at the Maplewood-Irvington border, where the road turns into Essex CR 603.
