This route used to be NJ S-3-A, a second spur of NJ 3. NJ 3 was NJ 20, and NJ S-3 is what became the NJ 3 freeway. However, NJ 3 was rerouted onto a freeway that replaced NJ S-3, and the connection that NJ S-3-A / NJ 161 once had with another state route was severed. This leaves NJ 161 isolated from other state routes, although it does come close to NJ 3. And interestingly, the NJ Highway Code once called this NJ 61, but it is unknown if NJ 61 ever existed. We do have 161, though.
NJ 161 starts at Allwood Road, Passaic CR 602. Simply extending NJ 161 west along CR 602 to the CR 509 and NJ 3 junction would finally connect NJ 161 to the rest of the state highway system.
NJ 161 / Clifton Avenue is a four-lane highway.
The only NJ 161 reassurance sign. All other signs are overhead blades. This sign tries to stuff three digits in a two-digit circle.
The northern end of NJ 161 at Passaic CR 614, Van Houten Avenue. Clifton Avenue continues north as CR 611.
