NJ 173

NJ 173 is the old alignment of US 22 from Phillipsburg to Clinton. It serves as local access for communities along I-78, which carries US 22 from east of Phillipsburg to Clinton.

The western terminus of NJ 173 at US 22 and I-78. And interesting way to abbreviate Pennsylvania as "Penna".

The northern terminus of CR 579 is at NJ 173, after the Church Street Bridge over the Musconetcong River. Only thing is, the intersection is in Warren County. But the stretch of CR 579 in Warren County is so short, once you cross the bridge, you're in Hunterdon County. NJ 173 also enters Hunterdon County too. So this JCT CR 579 sign is in error, but I'd rather keep the error than add confusion by signing for a county that CR 579 spends only 200 feet of its length in.

NJ 173 has four lanes and a center left-turn lane as it winds through hills. The center left-turn lane is for driveways, and the four lanes are because NJ 173 has climbing / deceleration lanes through this stretch. Otherwise, NJ 173 is a two-lane road.

NJ 173 runs right near its successor road, I-78 / US 22.

NJ 173 also serves as interchange movements for I-78 / US 22, but the only thing is NJ 173 is a two-way frontage road to the north of I-78 / US 22, and there is a two-way frontage road to the south. This is an interesting configuration, similar to the NJ 29 expressway in Trenton using the NJ 175 frontage road for interchange movements.

And yes, NJ 173 does overlap I-78 / US 22 for a short stretch.

NJ 173 takes an old bridge across the South Branch of the Raritan River, and just to the north is the even older Main Street Bridge. Inscribed on the NJ 173 bridge is a historic designation, NJSHR 9.
