NJ 185 connects NJ 440 to Liberty State Park... but not really. NJ 185 starts at NJ 440 but suddenly ends at Linden Avenue after only a half mile. Why the sudden end? NJ 185 was supposed to extend to Liberty State Park, industry, and Exit 14B of I-78 / NJ Turnpike Extension. However, the road was never built. There is still some right-of-way north of Linden Avenue for the northern extension, and Caven Point Road could be upgraded if the extension is built, which remains a possibility.
NJ 185 signed from NJ 440 NB. Notice how NJ 185 is the mainline and NJ 440 is the exit. The reason NJ 440 NB exits here instead of taking a real mainline is because NJ 440 was supposed to run on the east bank of the Hackensack, and this arterial was originally NJ 169.
NJ 185 intersects the NJ 440 SB to NJ 185 NB ramp.
The only reassurance shield for NJ 185 NB. Isn't that shield a little too small?
The northern terminus of NJ 185 at Linden Avenue. Traffic must turn left to go to Liberty State Park on Caven Point Road. However, the right-of-way still continues.
BONUS: Tracing the possible route of the NJ 185 northern extension, from NJDOT boring logs. The red line I drew in is the once-proposed northern extension of NJ 185.
