Modern NJ 26 is a remnant of 1927 NJH 26, the Trenton and New Brunswick Turnpike. NJH 26 ran from the intersection of Warren and Green Streets in Trenton to NJH S-28 (present-day NJ 18) in New Brunswick. This historical turnpike (and former NJH 26) is the arrow straight alignment of US 1 between Trenton and just south of New Brunswick, also known as Brunswick Pike. As for the rest? Livingston Avenue finishes the arrow-straight alignment to New Brunswick while US 1 bends towards New York City. This final stretch carries NJ 26 after NJH 26 was removed from US 1 in 1953, and NJ 26 was truncated even further in the 1970s to end at Nassau Street.
NJ 26 starts at US 1.
NJ 26 snakes under US 1 before assuming an arrow-straight alignment.

That's what NJ 26 is all about. A commercial corridor connecting US 1 to downtown New Brunswick.
