A historic road that also managed to keep its 1927 number. Started as the Tuckaraming Trail, a Lenape trail, then became part of the Old York Road. This is also a former routing of US 22, which parallels NJ 28 but bypasses many of the town centers that Route 28 passes through.
NJ 28 is Main Street in the historic downtown of Somerville.

No. CR 509 ends here and that is for CR 653 south. CR 509 used to extend along Union CR 653 towards South Plainfield, but the route no longer does that.
