NJ 284

NJ 284 is the southern extension of NY 284 into New Jersey. The route is seven miles long. The reason why the road is state maintained is because the majority of the route used to be NJSHR 8. NJSHR 8 is a former designation for NJH 23 / NJ 23 and follows the original routing along the two turnpikes (Newark-Pompton and Paterson-Hamburg) connecting Newark with Sussex. At Sussex, NJSHR 8 followed modern NJ 284 to the New York state line instead of continuing along modern NJ 23.

NJ 284 starts at NJ 23 in Sussex.

Other than NJ 23, the only significant routes NJ 284 junctions with are 600-series CRs in Sussex County.

NJ 284 comes to an old alignment (left). This old alignment is known as Old Route 84. Why 84 and not 284? NJ 284 used to be NJ 84 back when NY 284 was NY 84. I-84 was built in New York and was in a similar region as NY 84, prompting New York to renumber NY 84 as NY 284. This caused NJ to renumber NJ 84 as NJ 284.

Along old NJ 284.

NJ 284 ends at the state line, where it becomes NY 284.
