NJ 36

A route hugging the Atlantic Ocean and the Raritan Bayshore. From its southern terminus to Long Branch, NJ 36 is signed east-west. The rest of the route is signed north-south. Historically, the route from Sandy Hook to Garden State Parkway Exit 117 / NJ 35 was also signed east-west thanks to its geographic orientation (NJ 36 parallels east-west CR 516 here, and CR 516 begins at this segment), but having two east-west segments in opposite directions would be too confusing to follow, so that segment was left north-south.

Per NJDOT SLDs and mileposts, NJ 36 is a north-south route.

NJ 36 starts at NJ 18, Monmouth CR 51, and the Garden State Parkway. NJDOT officially logs NJ 36 as beginning at CR 51, and the route leading to the GSP is designated as NJ 444S.
