NJ 495 is the connector between the NJ Turnpike (I-95) and the Lincoln Tunnel. This was originally built as NJH 3 (predecessor to NJ 3). The route would be upgraded to Interstate standards and redesignated as I-495, anticipating the construction of the Mid-Manhattan Expressway and connection to I-495 in New York. However, the Mid-Manhattan Expressway was never built, and as a result, I-495 in New Jersey was severed from the rest of I-495. This led to the creation of NJ 495.
