NJ 53

This route has an interesting history. It used to be NJSHR 5, but was renumbered as NJH 5N when the number 5 was transferred in 1927, and then NJ 53. The alignment and termini have not changed, in fact, NJ 53's northern end is arbitrarily at Bloomfield Avenue in Denville (although it effectively ends at US 46, while also being signed from where Broadway and Main Street split). Bloomfield Avenue here is a remnant of NJSHR 12. Also, the state-maintained section of US 202 ends at NJ 53, so NJ 53 continues the state-maintained ribbon of pavement from Lambertville to Denville.

The southern end of NJ 53 at US 202 in Morris Plains.

A memorial designation along NJ 53.

NJ 53 intersects NJ 10 at a kitbashed (took old roads and turned them into ramps while building new road around it) parclo interchange. The old alignment of Tabor Road is used as the NJ 53 - NJ 10 connection, while NJ 53 passes under NJ 10.

Passing under NJ 10. There is an inscription in the concrete for NJH 5N, the former designation of NJ 53.

Tabor Road is old NJ 53 and serves as connections between NJ 53 and NJ 10.

How did you get THAT wrong?!

NJ 53 passes near the Mount Tabor section of Parsippany-Troy Hills.

Another inscription for NJH 5N, this time at US 46.

NJ 53 comes to a junction with US 46, before ending immediately at the western terminus of Bloomfield Avenue.

NJ 53 officially ends at Bloomfield Avenue. Why Bloomfield Avenue? That road used to be NJSHR 12, a predecessor of US 46.

There's still a little more. NJ 53 SB has a de facto start at Broadway in Denville, where Main Street (NJ 53) forks to the right.
