NJ 55, also known as the Cape May Freeway, is a freeway connecting Philadelphia to Gloucester and Cumberland Counties. But why is it called the Cape May Freeway? This was supposed to extend all the way to the Garden State Parkway and US 9 in Cape May Court House, a distance of around 20 miles. However, environmental concerns and expenses ultimately killed the southern extension, but it's not quite dead yet. The southern extension has been occasionally floated by regional politicians.
