NJ 81 is a short freeway connecting the NJ Turnpike / I-95 at Exit 13A with US 1-9. In addition, NJ 81 connects to the Newark Airport and the Elizabeth Seaport. Most signs for NJ 81 do not refer to NJ 81, instead referring to US 1-9 and Newark Airport heading northbound, or the NJ Turnpike heading southbound.
NJ 81 was originally supposed to meet the NJ Turnpike / I-95 at Exit 13; however, a new interchange, 13A, was built instead. This led to the closure of the Admiral William Halsey Service Area along the northbound NJ Turnpike located at the interchange. Part of those ramps were integrated into Exit 13A.

From Exit 13A on the car lanes. Follow the faded ghost markings on the shoulder to the Jersey barrier. Those are the remnants of a ramp to the Admiral William Halsey Service Area. The service area was closed because northbound drivers who used the plaza could not return to Exit 13A, and drivers entering from NJ 81 (at 13A) could not use the plaza.
