US 24 in Indiana

From the Illinois border to Logansport, US 24 is a two-lane back road. However, from Logansport to the Ohio border, US 24 is a major multilane expressway to freeway. This roadway follows either the Hoosier Heartland Highway, I-69, I-469, or the Fort to Port Highway.

US 24 west of Logansport:

US 24 and US 52 cross into Indiana from Illinois.

US 24 and US 52 junction US 41. US 52 departs from US 24 onto US 41, while US 24 continues eastward.

Hoosier Heartland Highway:

US 24 picks up the Hoosier Heartland Highway from IN 25 in Logansport. Just like I mentioned, the mainline doesn't have a designation at this split diamond interchange because all of the route designations follow the ramp. I guess INDOT treats the ramp as the de jure mainline for signed routes, while treating the de facto mainline as a ramp.

Interesting how of all the signalized intersections that exist on the Hoosier Heartland Highway, the US 24/US 35 junction isn't signalized. The junction involves two multilane roads, so I'd expect something more? And unless INDOT was restricted by the railroads, why couldn't INDOT make US 24 the mainline and US 35 the intersecting street when they designed Hoosier Heartland? After all, isn't the mainline the route from Lafayette to Fort Wayne, and not US 35, which keeps making turns?

Some other routes overlap Hoosier Heartland Highway.

The Hoosier Heartland Highway ends at I-69 just to the southwest of Fort Wayne. US 24 follows I-69 NB and I-469 EB (at the northern I-69/I-469 junction) to bypass Fort Wayne and reach the Fort to Port Highway.

However, the shorter route that most travelers use (and what should be the US 24 mainline) is Lafayette Center Road and I-469 from its southern junction with I-69 to the Fort to Port Highway.

Fort to Port Highway:

I don't have much to write about for the Indiana portion of the Fort to Port Highway, but I have more to say about the Ohio portion.
