Washington Street, Indianapolis (Historic US 40 / National Road)

Before the construction of I-465, US 40 followed Washington Street through Indianapolis. This section of US 40 is part of the historic National Road.

At the western junction with I-465.

The arches of the old Washington Street Bridge. This is an original construction of the National Road. The bridge was converted to a pedestrian bridge.

At the western end of the bridge. Washington Street used to continue here, but the road was rerouted for the establishment of the Indianapolis Zoo.

Details of the original bridge and levee.

This milepost is not for the National Road. This is for the Central White River Trail.

The NCAA Headquarters and Hall of Champions is located along the former path of US 40, now grassed over.

On the grassed-over alignment of US 40 (and the Central White River Trail) are informational signs for the Old National Road.

Washington Street takes a curve to the south. The path of original US 40 is traceable from the curve to the flagpole.
