A north-south county route connecting Stockton with Flemington, Whitehouse Station, and Bedminster.
Hunterdon County:

CR 523 begins at NJ 29 in Stockton.
CR 523 passes through rolling pastures on the way to the village of Sergeantsville.
CR 523 in Sergeantsville.
CR 523 has a wrong-way overlap with CR 579.
CR 523 approaching Flemington.
CR 523* in downtown Flemington.
*The routing of CR 523 in downtown Flemington is poorly defined. CR 523 is unsigned in Flemington, is not county-maintained until leaving Flemington, and has two possible routings. Both possible routings have CR 523 entering Flemington on Mine Street and exiting Flemington on Walter E. Foran Boulevard. However, the "official" (per NJDOT SLDs) routing of CR 523 places CR 523 on Park Avenue behind the historic courthouse and downtown, while another places CR 523 on Main Street in front of the historic courthouse and business district. This page assumes Main Street is the routing of CR 523, although I have been on both.
The NJDOT SLD routing of CR 523 in Flemington (green), and an acceptable alternate routing of CR 523 (blue).
CR 523 in Whitehouse Station.
Commercial buildings along CR 523.
Historic Whitehouse Station, now the village library, is located on CR 523.
CR 523 intersects US 22, has a brief overlap, and continues heading north.

The southernmost signs for CR 517. This is because of the I-78 interchange signing CR 517 south of where it begins. Although there should be a TO 517, because CR 517 ends at, not overlaps with, CR 523.
CR 517 departs from CR 523, and CR 523 orients east-west, though it is still signed north-south (north corresponds to east, and vice versa).
Somerset County:
CR 523 crosses into Somerset County.
