Before the Delaware Memorial Bridge was built, US 40 used a ferry to connect between Penns Grove and Wilmington. While the ferry dock is gone on the Delaware side, there are the remnants on the New Jersey side. NJ 48 used to extend as NJH 48 to the dock, but has since been truncated.
Remnants of the ferry dock and the truss bridges used to connect the dock with Penns Grove.

Penns Grove redeveloped part of the waterfront.

Former US 40 junctions former US 130 (Broad Street) in downtown Penns Grove and comes to an old cast iron highway distance sign.

Former US 40 / NJH 48 junctions current US 130, where modern NJ 48 begins.
