I-595 in Maryland (US 50, US 50 / US 301)

The longest unsigned stretch of Interstate highway. The 20-mile long I-595 designation exists for two reasons: to connect Washington DC to Annapolis and so I-97 can end at an Interstate highway. Maryland came close to signing I-595, but they opted not to because they felt adding I-595 would be even more confusing when US 50 and US 301 are already signed and well-established along a longer corridor. To back Maryland DOT's case is the removal of I-296 signs in Michigan (along US 131 in Grand Rapids) by another MDOT (Michigan DOT).

I-595 begins at I-95 and I-495.

Why is the US 50 shield offset? Here's why: Maryland DOT left room for an I-595 shield if they ever want to sign it.

Why can't Maryland sign SOUTH 301 at that exit?

I-595 junctions I-97, the shortest 2-digit Interstate highway.

I-595 ends at MD 70. US 50 and US 301 continue.
