I-695 stubs, Washington DC

The current I-695 in Washington, DC was intended to be a longer freeway. The majority of these freeways were cancelled, but some stubs remain.

South Leg Freeway:

The South Leg Freeway would have connected I-66 near the Kennedy Center to I-95 (present-day I-395) via the Independence Avenue and Maine Avenue corridors.

Independence Avenue at Maine Avenue. This junction would have had overpasses had the South Leg Freeway been built.

Maine Avenue exits itself, and the "ramp" to I-395 is the mainline. This is the eastern remnant of the South Leg Freeway.

See what I mean mainline. I-395 merges from the right onto the South Leg Freeway stub.

Southeast Freeway:

After the 11th Street Bridge reconstruction project, a stub of the Southeast Freeway was left behind. This stub once connected to another stub, the Barney Circle Freeway (planned I-295).

Southeast Boulevard is the original alignment of I-695. That segment of the Southeast Freeway connected to stubs for I-295, which were planned as the Barney Circle Freeway.
