I-78 in New York is incredibly short but should have been much longer. There were multiple cancelled expressways on this side of the Hudson that should have taken I-78 all across New York City. These cancellations are the same reason why I-78 and I-278 do not connect.
Eastbound
I-78 uses the Saint John's Rotary to circle the block bounded by Laight Street to the north, Hudson Street to the west, Ericcson Place to the south, and Varick Street to the east.
I-78 ends after circling the block.
Westbound
Westbound, I-78 is the funneling of four entrances of the Holland Tunnel into one portal. All of these entrances cut the block of Freeman Plaza into multiple pieces.
An overhead sign for the tunnel.

The portal of the tunnel. Notice the 1920s-era ornamentation.
The state line is in blue.
