I-78 / NJ 139

After the Newark Bay Extension ends, I-78 merges onto NJ 139 and uses the one-way pair of 12th Street (eastbound) and 14th Street (westbound) between the end of the freeway and the portals of the Holland Tunnel. Both routes lose their signage eastbound, and I-78 on this segment is only signed westbound.

All of the "exits" along this stretch of I-78 are traffic lights. I don't think this will ever be upgraded to a full freeway thanks to the combination of business owners in the area, opposition from Jersey City, and cost-prohibitive upgrades.
