NJ 79 is one of the oldest continuously used roads in New Jersey. The corridor was first established in 1701 and would later become the Monmouth County Plank Road by the 1800s. In 1927, the corridor was given a number, NJH 4, the predecessor of US 9. This road became US 9 until a bypass of Freehold and Matawan was built to be a more direct route to Cheesequake and South Amboy. After that, US 9 and NJ 4 were routed onto the more direct alignment and the old alignment became NJH 4A, which became NJ 79.
