NY 284 is a connector between NJ 284 and US 6 in Slate Hill towards Middletown.
Originally, this route used to be known as NY 8 to match NJSHR 8 (the predecessor of NJ 23 and NJ 284). NY 8 used to use modern NY 284, US 6, NY 211, and NY 17K as a route from New Jersey to Newburgh. In 1930, NY 84 was moved to a different route, and the designation was split between NY 84 south of Middletown, then NY 215 north of Middletown. Eventually in 1939, NY 215 became NY 17K. In 1966 when I-84 was being constructed, to remove a confusing route duplication thanks to the proximity of NY 84 and I-84, NY 84 was truncated to US 6 and the designation was split between the remnant route NY 284 and an eastern extension of NY 211 from Middletown to Montgomery.
Likewise, when NY renumbered NY 8 to NY 84 and then NY 284, NJ renamed NJSHR 8 first to NJH 8N after the 1927 renumbering, then NJ 84 after NY changed their route to NY 84, then finally NJ 284 to match NY.
