US 231 has multiple old alignments in the Lafayette / West Lafayette area. The route used to go through both Lafayette and West Lafayette. In 1999, US 231 was realigned to avoid downtown Lafayette using a new Wabash River bridge and an expanded River Road. In 2013, US 231 was further realigned to avoid West Lafayette via a new western bypass (shared with US 52, which was moved from its eastern bypass of Lafayette / West Lafayette, present-day Sagamore Parkway).

I wonder what that sign is missing... a US 231 shield! US 231 used to cross the Wabash River on the William Henry Harrison Bridge until the Governor Branigin Bridge was built in the 1990s.

The extra green space above Purdue Univ is for a US 231 northbound sign that was removed. The extra space above Crawfordsville and Brookston is for US 231 southbound and IN 43 northbound.
West Lafayette:
Northwestern Avenue (pre-1950s alignment):
Before the Harrison Bridge was built, US 231 used the Main Street Bridge and had a concurrency with US 52, using a segment of IN 26 and the entirety of Northwestern Avenue.
River Road, former US 231 (1999-2013 alignment):
After the Branigin Bridge was built, US 231 was moved onto its new alignment in Lafayette, as well as the bridge. US 231 used an upgraded portion of River Road between the Branigin Bridge and the Harrison Bridge.
On the right is the grading for the former US 231 alignment that connected directly to River Road.

Old US 231 junctioned the start of IN 43 and reverted to its 1954-2013 alignment at this interchange.
