Interchange 53 on I-80, better known as the the Spaghetti Bowl, is a massive interchange in Wayne. This is the junction of US 46, NJ 23, I-80, CR 703, and an assortment of service roads. This interchange started life as the Willowbrook Circle between US 46 and NJ 23. Eventually, I-80 and the modern realignment of NJ 23 (Newark-Pompton Turnpike Bypass) were built. This necessitated the rebuilding of the circle into an interchange, especially because of the freeway-to-freeway junction of I-80 and NJ 23. This led to the tangled mess next to the Willowbrook Mall known as the Spaghetti Bowl. I'm surprised that NJDOT didn't give this an "official" nickname of such as the Willowbrook Interchange, instead opting to call it the Spaghetti Bowl.
I-80
Photos here are primarily on the ramps from I-80, because this interchange doesn't look too special from the I-80 mainline.
I-80 EB:
I-80 EB is the least interesting portion of this interchange, as the EB ramp only connects I-80 EB to US 46 EB. No connections to NJ 23.
I-80 WB:
The more interesting connection between I-80 to the large road network as WB Exit 53 connects to every single route.
US 46
US 46 is a relative straight-shot through the interchange, although US 46 gets a little tangled in the Spaghetti Bowl.
US 46 WB:
US 46 EB:
NJ 23
NJ 23 is the most tangled through this interchange, especially because it was the route that was elongated by the original Willowbrook Circle, and its original alignment would later be bypassed, necessitating this interchange.
