Madison Avenue (former US 31)

Between East Street and Meridian Street, US 31 used Madison Avenue. US 31 once followed Madison Avenue through Greenwood, but US 31 was realigned to bypass Greenwood and that segment became IN 431.

US 31 picked up Madison Avenue, which continued south as IN 431. Immediately after, US 31 intersected a segment of former IN 100 at Troy Avenue.

A large portion of Madison Avenue is multilane and grade-separated because of an attempt to build an expressway from downtown Indianapolis to Greenwood. Portions within I-465 were built, however, the extension to Greenwood was never built. There is a plan to remove unneeded lanes and add a multi-use path to Madison Avenue thanks to US 31 being diverted onto I-465 and the existence of I-65/I-70 through downtown Indianapolis.

US 31 joins Meridian Street at South Street. IN 135 ended here.
