New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) northbound

After Exit 6, the NJ Turnpike carries I-95 all the way to the end of the Turnpike.

Northbound at Exit 7. This is the first (excluding Exit 6, a route transition) interchange I-95 has on the NJ Turnpike mainline.

Northbound approaching Exit 7A.

Approaching Exit 8. This interchange was heavily reconstructed to allow NJ 133 to directly connect with the NJ Turnpike. The toll plaza (and ramps) used to be in the southwest quadrant of the NJ Turnpike / NJ 33 crossing, now the interchange is in the southeast quadrant.

What are these lanes doing here? These are unused lanes from when the car-truck split used to end between Interchanges 8A and 9 before the split was extended south to Exit 6.

As seen from the Basilone Bridge, heading northbound. This is the Morris Goodkind Bridge that carries US 1 northbound across the Raritan River.

Northbound at Exit 10.

This is a large U-turn overpass for authorized vehicles. But why is this significant? This overpass is actually located at the former Exit 10.

Before NJ 440 / I-287 was built and connected to the NJ Turnpike, Exits 10 and 11 were different. Exit 10 was a partial interchange between the Garden State Parkway and NJ Turnpike, where traffic heading northbound on the Turnpike used Exit 10 to go north on the Parkway, and traffic heading south on the Parkway used that same ramp to go south on the Turnpike. Those were the only connections provided via Exit 10.

Exit 11 was a full interchange, but it only connected to US 9 rather than to both US 9 and the Garden State Parkway.

The three-level crossing of the NJ Turnpike (bottom), Garden State Parkway (middle), and CR 514 (top).

Northbound at Exit 12.

Exit 13 connects I-95 to I-278.

Exit 13A connects to NJ 81, but NJ 81 is completely unsigned here. There also used to be the Admiral William Halsey Service Area at this exact site. The service area was closed because northbound drivers who used the plaza could not return to Exit 13A, and drivers entering from NJ 81 (at 13A) could not use the plaza.

Exit 14 connects I-95 with I-78. This is part of the large Newark Airport Interchange, a massive tangle of roads.

Just after Exit 14, the New Jersey Turnpike comes to the Southern Mixing Bowl, where it splits into the Eastern and Western Spurs. The original mainline is the Eastern Spur. Both carry I-95.

Before the signs were replaced. I think these were better because they indicated which exits each spur had, and what roads can be accessed. Although US 46 and I-80 can be accessed from both the Eastern and Western Spurs.
