IN 431 was a designation used for former alignments of US 31 in the Indianapolis area. The designation was always intended to be divided, even if a long concurrency with US 31 would connect the two.
The southern segment of IN 431 was Madison Avenue through Greenwood and remained until it was deleted in the 1990s. This road went from Smith Valley Road in the south to Troy Avenue in the north.
The northern segment is more interesting. The original IN 431 was Westfield Boulevard and Rangeline Road from Meridian Street to 146th Street, the original alignment of US 31 in the north side of Indianapolis and Carmel. A new road was built along the Meridian Street corridor to carry US 31 and bypass the center of Carmel, rejoining the old US 31 alignment at 146th Street. With the new western bypass being built, IN 431 was designated on the original US 31. However, INDOT would again bypass the original IN 431, this time to the east. By the new definition, IN 431 started at IN 37 (Fall Creek Parkway), using an upgraded Keystone Avenue to IN 100 (86th Street). IN 431 then turned west onto IN 100 and rejoined Westfield Boulevard.
Eventually, a new expressway was built along the Keystone Avenue corridor to connect I-465 to US 31 at 146th Street. IN 431 was transferred onto the newer Keystone Avenue extension, completely removing IN 431 from Westfield Boulevard. This lasted until IN 431 was truncated to I-465, only leaving the Keystone Avenue Expressway as IN 431. IN 431 was finally deleted from the state highway system in 2007, and the segment of Keystone Avenue between I-465 and US 31 became the Keystone Parkway.
That means, the original northern alignment of IN 431 was bypassed on both sides and would even get another western bypass when Meridian Street was upgraded to a freeway, creating a bypass of a bypass!
So, enough storytelling and let's hit the road.
